This is my first computer ever! It's from 1994, and it was bought at CompUSA (admirable computer store at the time, it's gone now.) This computer cost ...

My computer still boots up and shuts down as fast as it did with 256 MB of RAM?
I had 256 MB of RAM on my computer then I bought two 512 MB cards (I took out the 256 because my laptop holds only two cards) and my computer still seems to establish up and shut down a little faster, but not as fast as it should be. When I start it up though, I used to not be able to do anything for like 20 minutes (My laptop sincerely needed the memory...) but now I can start doing stuff in like 5 minutes, but my uncle (He's good with computers) says that it should be pursuit faster. My laptop has a 1.8 GHz processor and is running on Windows XP Home Edition. It is a HP-Compaq Presario V2405us.
Thanks
I noticed some of you have mentioned desktop, it's a laptop, not a desktop. And I be acquainted with I had like 256MB, but that's what was installed. I had about 32 MB available, then I cleared my temporary Internet files and got up to 222 MB.
Thanks
I should have also plus that I will have had my LAPTOP for 2 years as of this Christmas (Christmas of 2007).
Simple processes such as booting and shutting down do not benefit much from RAM; they are more dependent on the stony disk speed and the processor.
RAM is only a benefit when the computer can find a use for it; eg. making things more efficient in heavy tasks. It's mainly second-hand for lowering the amount of swapping, doing more operations at once, etc.
So, increasing your RAM should not create a noticeable difference unless you were really failing in RAM in the first place. Otherwise, it only helps for multi-tasking, etc.
it's up to you, do you want speed or battery life.
I agree with your uncle you needed more ram for your laptop, XP needs at least 512mb to enact well.
It also sounds like you need to format and reinstall windows, even with that low amount of ram the computer should not take 20 mins to have a usable desktop. Sounds parallel virii or spyware, and is probably easier to start clean.
